ब्रह्मा और महादेव के वरदान से राक्षसराज रावण को असीम शक्तियाँ प्राप्त होती हैं। रावण इन शक्तियों का उपयोग पृथ्वी और देव लोक के विनाश के लिये करने लगता है। उसके पापकर्मो से पृथ्वी पर धर्म और सत्य की हानि होने लगती है। पृथ्वी पर असुरों की शक्तियाँ बढ़ने लगती हैं और साधु-सन्तों की शक्तियाँ उनका प्रतिकार नहीं कर पाती है। रावण से भयभीत सभी देवी देवता जानते हैं कि जब-जब पृथ्वी पर धर्म की हानि होती है और अधर्म बढ़ने लगता है तो धर्म की पुनर्स्थापना के लिये भगवान को मानव रूप में अवतार लेना होता है। इसी आशा के साथ वे सभी भगवान विष्णु के पास गुहार लगाने जाते हैं।

उधर पृथ्वी पर अयोध्या के राजा दशरथ अपनी कोई सन्तान न होने के कारण चिन्तित हैं। उन्हें अपने राज्य के लिए उत्तराधिकारी चाहिये। समस्या निवारण के लिये राजा अपनी रानियों के साथ महर्षि वशिष्ठ के पास जाते हैं। वशिष्ठ उन्हें पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए पुत्र कामेष्ठि यज्ञ का उपाय सुझाते हैं। रानी कौशल्या महर्षि वशिष्ठ से यज्ञ करने का निवेदन करती हैं किन्तु वशिष्ठ उन्हें बताते हैं कि इस यज्ञ को अथर्व वेद के ज्ञाता श्रृंग मुनि ही सम्पन्न करा सकते हैं। छोटी रानी कैकेयी श्रृंग मुनि को आमंत्रित करने की बात कहती हैं, किन्तु महर्षि वशिष्ठ उन्हें टोकते हैं कि दशरथ को राजा बनकर नहीं, एक याची के रूप में स्वयं उनके पास जाना होगा। राजा दशरथ नंगे पांव श्रृंग मुनि के आश्रम जाते हैं और अपने आँसुओं से उनकी चरण वन्दना करते हैं।

श्रृंग मुनि अत्यन्त प्रसन्न होते हैं और उनका मनोरथ पूर्ण करने के लिये यज्ञ करते हैं। यज्ञकुण्ड से अग्निदेव प्रकट होते हैं और राजा दशरथ को खीर के एक पात्र के साथ इच्छापूर्ति का वरदान देते हैं। दशरथ वह खीर कौशल्या व कैकेयी को खाने के लिये दे देते हैं। दोनो रानियां स्नेहवश अपनी खीर का आधा-आधा अंश छोटी रानी सुमित्रा को दे देती हैं। समय बीतने के साथ चैत्र मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की नवमी तिथि को पुनर्वसु नक्षत्र में तीनों रानियों को पुत्र प्राप्ति होती है। बड़ी रानी कौशल्या और मंझली रानी कैकेयी को एक-एक पुत्र और खीर के दो अंश मिलने के कारण छोटी रानी सुमित्रा को जुड़वां पुत्र होते हैं। इसके साथ ही देवी-देवताओ और पृथ्वीवासियों की प्रतीक्षा की घड़ी समाप्त होती है। महर्षि वशिष्ठ द्वारा चारो बच्चों का नामकरण किया जाता है।

वशिष्ठ कहते हैं कि धर्म और सत्य की रक्षा करने के लिए और अखिल विश्व को आनंद देने आये ज्येष्ठ पुत्र का दो अक्षर का नाम “राम“ होगा, रानी कैकेयी के पुत्र का नाम “भरत“ और रानी सुमित्रा के जुड़वाँ पुत्रों के नाम “लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न“ होंगे। महर्षि वशिष्ठ चारों भ्राताओं में परस्पर अटूट प्रेम रहने की भविष्यवाणी भी करते हैं।

The series was re-aired during the 2020 Coronavirus lockdown and broke several viewership records globally which includes setting the record for one of the most watched TV shows ever in the world, with 77 million viewers on 16 April 2020.
